There seem to be a number of advantages to rotating detonation rocket engines over 'normal' rocket engines. Are Relativity actively investigating these for future flights of the Terran R, or some later vehicle? Thanks! :-)

It’s a shame to see all this effort and resources, and talent spent trying to catch up to what spacex has already accomplished. Instead of competing against spacex, or trying to replicate what they do, start building a space station/fuel depot in space. That’s where the market is wide open. True, resource retrieval will be needed from planets, but space based platforms to operate from will be required long before that.

The answer sort of unnecessarily skirts around the underlying reason. It's pressure broadening. Think of whenever you've seen an old, long tube style sodium vapor street lamp, the kind that produce an almost totally pure yellow light at 589nm and nothing else, which completely destroys the ability to perceive the normal color of objects lit solely by this light. These are low pressure lamps that operate at much less than 1 bar. Now think of the more common sodium vapor street lamps that, while rapidly disappearing due to replacement by LEDs, are still around in some places and while still very yellow, actually emit much more blue, green, and red light. Under these lights you CAN see some color in objects. Why? These are HIGH pressure sodium lamps and they're operating at around 1 bar of pressure. The "pressure broadening" or "collisional broadening" of the spectral lines of sodium is happening in a high pressure gas because the lifetime of the excited state of the atoms can be much greater than the interval between interatomic collisions, and this perturbation by colliding atoms causes the premature transition and emission of a photon. The decreased lifetime of the excited state creates an increased uncertainty (Heisenberg uncertainty) in the photon energy, thus broadening the emission line. In the combustion chamber of the rocket engine, pressures are well in excess of A HUNDRED BAR, and many collisions are happening between the molecules of excited gas before they fall back to the ground state. The few emission lines of normally blue light are therefore being severely broadened out over the whole visible spectrum to create a continuum of light emission that appears white...because it is.

@@TheHiralis I don't know of any other word to describe it than promising, and I don't see how it's dodgy in any way. Maybe the prototypes can seem like so, but, like, they are prototypes, of course they are going to be somewhat dodgy, and in fast-faced product development and iteration, I can tell you from experience (as anecdotal as it may be), even if not in rocket engineering, that this is completely expected.

This is all wonderful, nice engine and all that. And RELATIVITY raises a lot of cash $$$ - but for what? For their 3D printing services, NOT for a TERRAN 2 rocket? - nowhere in sight, (after TERRAN 1 rocket, stage 2 failed long ago). And why don't I care about all this, RELATIVITY not climbing back on the LAUNCH horse, it seems??
